A close friend of a Portland massage therapist who accused former Vice President Al Gore of groping her says the therapist told her soon after the encounter that she'd been violated and assaulted by "someone in the higher ups.

The editor of the National Enquirer said Thursday the tabloid didn't pay the Portland massage therapist for its story. The statement said the tabloid initially heard about the story through a tip. According to Portland police, no one from The Enquirer contacted the bureau to discuss the allegations, or requested the police reports or sought interviews with investigators.
